Felt Topiary

We're very excited to be celebrating the birthday of our beloved Arts and Crafts program. We decorated the store like a birthday party and have some fun activities lined up!

Today we made a topiary made out of felt. We cut 2" circles of felt using the die cut machine in the shop. Then we folded those into quarters and pinned them to a giant styrofoam ball.

This ball is GIANT! I think it was a 6" diameter ball. It took 3/4 of a yard of felt to cut out enough circles. And lots of straight pins. It took a little while to get the whole ball covered, so we enlisted help from our customers!

Once we got the ball covered we used a dowel rod to create the "tree trunk." We cut ours with the big saw in the frame shop, but that's just because we could. You can do this yourself with a craft knife or a handsaw with no problem! Half a styrofoam ball sits in the bottom of the pail to hold in place, and home dec rocks cover the ball to make it look pretty. Tie it off with a ribbon and you have a fun felt topiary ready for your Valentine's or Spring home decor!

Glitter Shoes Tutorial

This quick and easy DIY shoe makeover will add a sparkly punch to your wardrobe this winter!

I used silver shimmer Mod Podge so that the shoes would still look sparkly if some of the glitter flaked off. I used a foam brush to paint on the glue, but feel free to use whatever kind of brush makes you happy.

I filled the inside of the shoe with a plastic bag to attempt to keep the glitter out. It helped a little. Work over a paper plate or something to catch all the loose glitter!

Some tips:
1. Go easy on the glue. The places where I used a thinner layer of glue actually came out nicer. The thicker areas started peeling a little by the end of the day.
2. After the shoes have dried rub them gently to knock off any loose glitter. Unless of course you WANT to leave a trail of pixie dust everywhere you go, which is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, except at my house.
3. Check for missed spots and fill them in with additional glue and glitter.
4. Wait until the shoes are DRY before you try to wear them.

Overall impression:
I can't believe I made glitter shoes! It may be the first trendy fashion thing I've ever done... Because the shoes I used are a slick pleather type material the glue is peeling in high stress areas and where I got it too thick. They will have to be maintained, but there was PLENTY of glitter left over so it's ok. I bet this would work even better with canvas shoes. Hmmmm.... now to see what shoes can be made over next...

Memories

Show of hands: who has been here long enough that they remember when we were called "The Gussy Goose?" Anyone? Anyone? Oh, I DO! That was our store name for many years and every now and then someone still calls us that. Well we had an employee who picked us up a mascot one year! Anyone remember these?

Apparently they were all the rage one year and you bought little seasonal clothes for them! Oh yeah. So we had her sitting in the window, and then she would play hide and seek with the regular's kids (yeah Cindi, that's you!) and she even spent some time traveling the world! We played a game where our customers had to guess what famous landmark she was in front of.

Well, three years ago we opened the Patch Arts and Crafts Center. We tried to keep her as a memento but over time people just wondered why we had the big plastic goose in the window. So alas, she was banished to the storage room.

Fast forward through the years. Every time the girls turned around there was the goose, taking up space. The last straw was a few weeks ago when she was taking up a space where fabric needed to go. Katelyn and Beth went all secret squirrel on me, and the next thing I know THIS is hanging on our wall!

Isn't she awesome! Much better than the plastic goose she started out as! Well, the girls did the project very secretively just in case I wouldn't be happy. So there's no tutorial, but if you have a plastic lawn ornament you want to mount, it's pretty easy!

1. Saw the head off the animal with a little hacksaw.

2. Decorate the mount. The girls used this frame from Kaiser Craft (which we have more of at the store)

3. Glue the head to the mount. The girls ended up putting some little wood brackets on the inside of the neck, and then attached that to the mount. Sorry I don't have pictures!

So, if you're looking for something fun to do with some plastic animals, this could be a fun project! Don't have one that big? Check out this site that used little animals for coat hooks and magnets. Happy crafting!

Watercolors by Kirsten Carlson

Kirsten Carlson is one of our instructors and is an amazing artist! Mary and I went to see her work on display at an art gallery in Leonberg and were blown away! Kirsten has a degree in marine biology and her artwork is based on her real life experience under water! She even had a globe marking the places around the world she has dove. She also showed us a video and her equipment she used to draw UNDER WATER!

Kirsten will have some artwork, the children's books she has illustrated, and some postcards available at the upcoming Art and Espresso, May 19-21. She will also have a few items on display at the store when her exhibition is finished. If you want to LEARN from an amazingly talented, energetic, and just plain fun instructor, look for Kirsten's watercolor and drawing classes at the shop.

Our Kara, from the Frame Shop, made this LOVELY Saturday Market Bag! In fact, Mary squealed out loud when she saw it and shouted at me to come look! We absolutely love the fabric choice! The bag is a very nice size for toting around all your essentials, plus a few. Our favorite part of this particular bag is the mess pocket Kara added to the side. You know what it's made out of? A laundry bag! How clever is that!?!

Sew with your kids

I've been letting my son (almost 6) push the "gas" on the sewing machine for awhile now and recently I've been letting him practice stitching with scrap fabric. Today I let him make his first project, a pin cushion. If you have young children in the house who like to push all the buttons on your sewing machine, let them! It's fun! Here's some tips:

1. Put your machine on half speed. That way when he "puts the pedal to the metal" your machine will still go at a decent speed.

2. Let them clip all the chain stitched pieces apart with scissors. Age appropriate scissors please, and make sure they can clip the thread and not the block!

3. Let little fingers pull all the paper off the back of your paper piecing blocks. You'll love me for that one! :)

4. When they are ready (or when you aren't terrified) give them some scrap fabric to practice straight stitches.

5. Start with simple fast projects to help them feel a sense of accomplishment. Don't worry if seams aren't straight or if points don't match. Just let them enjoy the process and give lots of praise!

The project above was made with scraps of the quilt blocks. I made sure the blocks were the same size and helped him position them. My son is extremely intense when he sews, so I wasn't afraid to use pins to mark where he should start and stop. If your child is more free you might not want to put pins in the fabric! We sewed the fabric right sides together on three sides, then clipped the corners. Then we turned, stuffed, and did topstitching on the open side to close it up. We didn't bother with hand sewing because ... well... because we wanted it done! :)

Monster Mash

New in the store - Smooshie Monster friends! You may be thinking, huh? But seriously, these are so fun! Think Mr. Potato Head meets Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. Still confused? Ok, these are super soft pillow like bodies made out of minky (yes minky) fabric and felt. The little monster parts are all velcro and you place them where you want on the body. Then there are little loops on the sides to hold the arms, legs, ears, etc. My kids are crazy for these! I'm going to have to buy another one for myself....

So what you need is a body (there are several to choose from) and a few packs of parts. Each pack comes with some face parts and a limb. If these turn out to be something that you (the customers) enjoy we can order more loose limbs. But we need to see if you're going to buy them.... Ok, so I bought two. How many do you want?

A few months ago we had the pleasure of hosting a couple of fabulous ladies from R&Z Fabric who showed us the latest stuff and helped us place orders for the next few months. Here's Corinnea with one of the stacks of samples. I love fabric day.....

I love the Fleur d'Paris. I made the Spring Ruffle Top with the purple flowery print and some Violet Kona Cotton. I added an elastic cap sleeve instead of the ruffle.

Stop by the store this week and check out the new stuff. The weather may still be a bit frightful, but the shop is springing up fabulous fabric!!! :)

Custom Pop-Top Cans

Choose a can with a pop-top lid. Use a safety can opener to remove the lid (or base) without popping the top. The safety can opener makes it possible to put the lid back on later. Remove contents and wash and dry thoroughly.

Fill the can with goodies! If you're filling it with food, put in a plastic bag to protect it from the glue in the next step.

Glue on the lid with super glue. Decorate the outside with papers or decorations. I used the digital scrapbooking kit Countdown to Christmas. Give to your friends and watch them marvel at how you got your cookies inside the can!

Saturday Scraps

Christmas Tree and Wreath

Materials Needed:
Styrofoam cone
2 sheets holiday scrapbooking paper
about 260 ball head straight pins
Large star shaped (or other fun shaped) punch

Punch out as many stars (or chosen shape) from your paper as you can.
Pin the shapes to the styrofoam base, being careful to poke at an angle (down) and not through the narrow bits of the cone.
Starting at the top will produce a tree with "leaves" pointing upwards. Starting at the bottom will produce a tree with "leaves" pointing downward.
Tuck the edges of the top shape under the surrounding shapes to cover the styrofoam. Use a little hot glue here if neccessary.
Trim the bottom shapes so they are flush with the edge, and sit flat.

For best effect use double sided printed paper or cardstock. For an alternate style, use several different green prints, or try color variations.

Christmas Wreath

If you have some leftover shapes this is a fun project to make.

Cut a round "wreath" base from heavy cardstock, cardboard, or whatever stiff material you have.
Cover one side with double sided tape and adhere shapes, or use glue dots to adhere each shape.
Use hot glue or staple a ribbon loop to the back to hang.
OR punch a hole in the top to tie the ribbon through.
Repeat step 2 on the backside for a double sided ornament.
Accent with glitter for a fun sparkly effect.

Clothespin Bats

Make these adorable Clothespin Bats and start Halloween off right!

Supplies (to make 6 bats):

bat template found here

3 sheets of black 12x12 card stock

hot glue gun works the best but for children use tacky glue

pencil and paper scissors

red and black paint

6 large clothespins

Print and cut out template

Trace template on to black card stock with pencil (you will need 12 bats total)

Cut out each bat

paint eyes on each bat using red paint

Take apart clothespins and paint black

Once dry, reassemble clothespins

Take 6 bats and turn them upside down.

Run a strip of hot glue down the body (see picture below) and immediately put a clothes pin on top of the glue as pictured

Take your remaining 6 bats and on the wrong side, run a strip of glue down each body. Immediately take your clothes pins that are already glued to the other bats and stick them on the glue strip. You should now have your clothespin sandwiched between two bats.

To make the wings stick together, peel back one wing and apply a glue dot about the size of a dime on the other wing (see photo). Immediately squeeze the two wings together. You will do this for all the bats on each wing.

Your finished!

Attach them to curtains or blinds or make a "clothesline" of bats by stringing clear monofilament across a window or wall like we did at the store.

Part 2: Getting Started

You'll first need to choose your editing program. I use Photoshop Elements, so I can personally say that it's a great program. Don't take my word for it, though. Get online and look around, you might find something you like better! (If you already have a program that you like, please don't hesitate to leave your thoughts in our comments section, perhaps you can help to guide future digi scrappers!)

Once you have your program and have familiarized yourself with it a bit, you'll need some scrapbooking elements to go with those fabulous photos of yours. You have a lot of options here. I would suggest that you start off with one or more of the Digital Scrapbook Memories CD's that we have available in the store. These are compatible with any editing program which supports a .PNG format. They contain a large quantity of elements, such as digital stickers, brads, and alphabets that can give you a good start to your digital collection. Remember, these things can be used repeatedly, so after the initial purchase, it's not necessary to continue purchasing more elements. To augment your collection, though, there are many online stores which sell down-loadable digital pages and elements. One of our staff is a designer for just such a store! You can check out her designs and many others at Digiridoo Scraps, but this is just one example of many such online shops available to you. Many of these shops and designers do freebie samples, too, so you can snag great add-ons for your digital pages for free!

If you like playing with the photos themselves, you can also buy and download actions for your photos, which can help to make photo editing quick and easy. These actions are generally suited to a specific program, and most of what I've seen are either for Photoshop, or Photoshop Elements. Pioneer Woman has a lot of great actions, as do CoffeeShop, Totally Rad, and Eye Candy.

If you get stuck, no sweat! For technical support, check out the website for your editing program, or just type your problem into Google and you're sure to find all sorts of tutorials. As a matter of fact, most of the sites I listed above have some great tutorials as well! If your creativity has started to sputter, find inspiration in other scrappers' creations. Remember those online scrap shops? Most of them are full of example pages! You can also check my blog archives for some of my pages (look here and here), and Kelly has a digi scrapbook slide show on her blog.

If you aren't quite ready to take the leap on your own, check out one of the Digital Scrapbooking classes taught at Patch Multi-Crafts. One class is going on today (if you read this before 10am you can still bring your laptop over and jump in the class) and the next will be October 8 & 15 from 11:00 to 14:00. As always, we would love to see your digital designs!

Rag Quilt Letters

They were hung with double sided tape but you could sew/glue them on a ribbon or use string as a "clothesline" on the wall and hang each letter with a clothes pin.

Scrapbook Satruday: Go Digital!

Part 1: The Perks

To anyone who has ever been interested in scrap booking or photography, I would like to say this: Go digital. Not that there is anything wrong with traditional paper-and-glue scrap books! But why not give digital a try?

There are a lot of digital scrap booking programs out there, but I use Photoshop Elements and I love it! You can use the program to manually tweak your photos, or you can download actions that will change your photos automatically. You can try different looks, zoom and crop, and so long as you don't save the changes, you can just hit "undo" and it will revert back to the original if you don't like it!

Coffee Shop's "Vintage News" Action

Once you get your photos looking just the way you want them, you can then put together your scrapbook page with the same program. All of your papers, stickers, stamps and embellishments will be digital, so you will have no clean up when you're done. And, just like with the photos, you can undo anything! There's no wasted material if you cut a paper or place a sticker that you decide doesn't look so great after all. Perhaps best of all, everything will be contained in your computer and can be set aside at any time with no mess strewn all over your dining or coffee table. If you happen to be working on a lap top, even better! Your project can be taken with you where ever you go!

What is Sublime Stitching??

It's not your Grandma's Embroidery, that's for sure!

About Sublime Stitching:

"Sublime Stitching was founded in Austin, Texas in 2001 by artist Jenny Hart, due to an overabundance of bunny-n-duckie patterns and outdated, overly-difficult instructions for embroidery. Unable to find alternative designs for embroidery that appealed to a new generation of stitchers, Jenny decided to make them herself, and her Internet indie craft biz, Sublime Stitching was born. Sublime Stitching introduced edgy embroidery patterns, all-in-one embroidery starter kits and entertaining, now-I-understand-it instructions to bring stitching back to life for a new generation of crafters. Hart's pioneering take on an ages-old handcraft was met with worldwide press and hordes of loyal crafters, thankful for finally having an alternative to geese in bonnets.

Think Embroidery is hard? Think again! It really is super easy.

There are many ways to embroider, here is just one, easy way.

1. Tape your paper design to the window (during the day! And blue painters tape works the best)

2. Tape a piece of muslin, bleached or unbleached, over the paper design so you can see the design through the fabric. Tape the fabric so it's taught, around all 4 sides. You don't want the fabric to move much.

3. Take a water soluble pen and trace the design onto the fabric

4. When done, take down the fabric and paper. Take tape off fabric and insert fabric in to a hoop.

5. Thread your needle (size and type of needle is up to the embroiderer!) with DMC floss, and embroider around the design you traced. It's that easy.

Because we're all "going green", here's a tutorial on reusable snack bags!

This project is so easy and perfect for the beginning sewer.
Please read entire tutorial before starting!

You will need:

1pc outer fabric measuring 11"x7.5"*
1pc lining fabric measuring 11"x7.5"
1pc (of both sides) sew-on velcro 6.25"
pins
scissors
sewing machine
matching thread (**see step 4)
Iron

*I used a one-way design and becasue of this, when I flip over my snack bag, the owls are upside down!
Seam allowances are indicated for each step. Always back stitch.
**
1. Lay your two pieces of fabric, right sides together and sew both short ends with an 1/4" seam.
2. Press seams open.

3. Turn right sides out and press seams flat

**when sewing on the Velcro, I used blue thread in my bobbin and off white on the top
4. Center Velcro pieces on the short ends of the bag, lining side up (make sure the fluffy side and scratchy sides of Velcro are facing up!). No need to pin as it's OK if you're not exactly in the middle but pin if it makes you more comfortable.
5. Sew Velcro to fabric around all 4 sides, right along the edges as pictured. Repeat for other piece of Velcro. Your snack bag should now look like the picture below.

6. Fold fabric in half with lining facing. The Velcro will stick together. No need for pins!

7. Sew an 1/8" seam down both sides (see picture below).8. Turn bag so WRONG (lining) sides are facing out. Use something (not sharp) to poke out your corners. Fabric should look like the above picture.

9. Sew down both sides of bag using a 3/8" seam (see picture below). This will enclose the 1/4" seam from step 7.

10. Turn bag right sides out, poke out corners and you are done!

You can make this bigger or smaller, depending on your needs. For a sandwich sized bag, cut your fabrics @ 19"x7.5", Velcro should be 6.25" also. You can also use vinyl, or other water proof fabrics to line your bag.

Hello crafty people! Here's an easy and fun project that's half rainy-afternoon craft, half Extreme Makeover: Home Edition! Armed with a pot of Mod-Podge, some designer papers and a lamp shade and base kit, the possibilities for creative design are endless!

Start with the plain lampshade. Paint the top and bottom edges in the color of your choice (Girly suggestion: hot pink!). While the paint is still wet, roll the lampshade across a sheet of old, unwanted newspaper, using a pencil to mark the start- and end-points. Cut this section out, you now have the template for the shape of the shade. The newspaper template can be cut into as many sections as you want (I made 3 sections, cutting from top to bottom). Use the template to cut your pieces out of cardstock or paper.

Once you have your sections cut out (and have double-checked that they will fit) apply Mod-Podge to the part of the lampshade being covered. I prefer a paintbrush to a foam brush, but both will work. Stick the paper to the shade, making sure to smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles before it dries. Continue until all sections are covered. Leave the covered shade to dry completely several hours before going back to apply a finishing Mod-Podge coat.

Use the same technique for covering the base. Rather than using large pieces of paper, I used a square punch and covered the base with smaller squares of paper, overlapping each other. The possibilities are endless!

You can add flair to a basic paper-covered lampshade with ribbon, stickers, acrylic paint, buttons, stamps, fabric -- anything you can get your hands on!

Scrappin Outside the Album

Want a great way to use some scraps and make a fun work of art? Give mixed-media collage a try. This really fun Father's Day collage was made with pieces of random scrapbooking paper, handmade mulberry paper, tags, buttons, feathers, and a cute little Father's Day poem I found here.

Start with a stretched canvas in any size. Choose your scraps and elements and rip, cut and rough them up. Lay them out on your canvas and get an idea of where you want everything to lay. Starting with the bottom layers apply glue to the back of the paper and adhere to the canvas. Build up with your papers, tucking some under corners, ripping edges, and even curling edges. Add to curled edges to give them a little more stability. Modge Podge works great for adhering and sealing the papers, but you might want to use hot glue, or a tacky glue for the heavier items like buttons or memorabilia. To make your canvas even more personalized try adding in photos of the family, or old photos from your child hood.

More tips:

To make papers look aged wad up the paper and then smooth open. Use sandpaper to rough up the edges and the creases.
Use a beige/light brown/rust colored paint and a stiff bristled brush to scrape paint across areas to make it look grungy.
After the glue has dried use sandpaper around the edges to make it look vintage.
If the vintage look is what you're after, try printing your photos in sepia or stain your papers with coffee.

There are no set rules, except use whatever makes you smile and don't be afraid to get sticky!

Buy an unfinished peg from Patch Multi-Crafts
Unscrew knob
Paint with base color, and let dry completely
Cut your favorite decorative paper to fit front and decoupage
Once dry put knob back on
Decorate knob with tiny accents
Hang on wall!

Make this adorable Fabric Butterfly Preserve!

Wonderful tutorial found here.

We just got in a shipment of different sized frames that are perfect for this.

The butterfly's are so easy to make! Just two items are needed: fabric and fabric stiffener.

This is a great little way to use some scrap fabric and match your room decor or your latest quilt.

Want to try some variations? Try your favorite scrapbooking paper and use Modge Podge to stiffen the wings instead of fabric stiffener. Don't glue them to the shape supporter though! Instead of butterflies try some other winged creature like dragonflies, moths, or angel wings.

Patch Multi-Crafts announces its first Scrapbooking Creative Team Call!

We're looking for talented scrapbookers to show the community what they can do with our new scrapbooking products! Team members will receive free product to use to make samples for the store. Samples will stay in the store as long as the line is for sale, and then the creative team member (ctm) will be able to to keep the sample! More detailed information will be explained to interested participants.

So how can you become a CTM? We'll be accepting applications for the first round of CTMs for one week. To apply, use the Page Map below to present a "Scrapbook Bio" of yourself and why you love scrapbooking.

Requirements:

You must use products currently on sale in the store in your scrap bio.

The main photo must be of you.

Title is your first name.

Digital may be included, but it must be primarily traditional products.

Must be in a page protector when turning in.

Include your full name and email address on the back of the page.

Bios of selected CTMs will remain with Patch Multi-Crafts for the duration of the CT involvement.

The other bolts are shot through with different colors giving the fabric a sheen that gets better with age.

Martina Reed, one of our wonderful volunteers, made this quilt out of the line. It's gorgeous! This quilt pattern is a free download from here. Tina made it a bit smaller than the pattern called for, it's a great size and a nice option for a smaller quilt. She is usually in on Tuesdays if you would like any advice.

Here comes Peter Cotton Tail, hoppin down the bunny trail, hippity hoppity Easter on it's way!

Did you hunt eggs with your kids this morning? Visit the Easter Bunny? CYS always puts on a fun event the Saturday before Easter. So if you're reading this early enough, go out and enjoy it!

When you get back, here's a few fun Easter things to get you motivated to craft.

Decoupaged Eggs

For the two green eggs, I stuck a letter sticker to them when completely dry then dyed it in food coloring. I then peeled off the sticker and used a rub on for the flower/swirl and butterfly. The yellow and blue eggs were dyed then I stuck flower stickers and stars (I used a punch for the stars) to it with sparkle Mod Podge..

Paper Crafters

The new making memories paper line is in the store and it is so "springy!" The embellishments haven't arrived yet, for some odd reason, but the papers are available. Hopefully the rest of the order will arrive soon.

I used the butterfly paper to embellish some plain blown eggs.

With Easter just a hop, skip and a jump away we figured you're probably thinking, "OH, the EGGS!" Was that just me? ... Easter is one of my favorite holidays (for many reasons), and decorating eggs is one of my favorite traditions. Whether it's simple dyed eggs, painted eggs, plastic eggs with goodies, or elaborately decorated eggs, there's just something fun about decorating an egg.

I remember about seven or eight years ago there was an issue of Martha Stewart Living that did a feature on wax resist eggs. Their eggs were simple. The kind you did as a kid with white crayon. But they mentioned the inspiration for their designs was from Pysanky eggs. I had no idea how to even pronounce this word, much less what it was. So, me being the obsessive crafter that I am, I researched it, learned everything I could, bought a kit, and started decorating eggs in the traditional Ukranian style.

My favorite part about these eggs is the symbolism. Every design on the egg is purposeful. It tells of a culture's faith, stamina, and thirst for life. If you're interested in learning more about this decorating technique I highly recommend the Ukranian Gift Shop. That's where I get my supplies from. They have great instructional books and high quality supplies.

If you're looking for some [less elaborate] decorating techniques I have to refer you back to good 'ol Martha. There's a fun little segment on the website with 39 different ways to decorate your eggs. Someone has GOT to try these chocolate eggs! If you do be sure and bring me one!

Sample Sunday

March was filled with lots of fun craft classes and beautiful creations, and we're hoping April will be the same! Stop by our shop and sign your family members up for some classes! It's a great way to get creativity flowing, learn some new skills and have a great time!

One of our biggest and best annual events is Kid's Craft Camp, which takes place the week of Spring Break. If you're looking for a creative outlet for your kids during this week off school, Craft Camp is the perfect choice!!

$125 for 5 sessions over 5 days. April 6th-10th. 11 - 1:30. Kids will need to bring a sack lunch every day and a white, 100% cotton T-shirt for tie-dying.

Here's a rundown of what they'll be doing each day:

Jennifer made an adorable giant clothes pin this week out of the Sasafrass Lass Robotics kit.

Decopauge is so easy and fun that even pre-schoolers can get in on it! Want a fun activity to do with your kids? Next time you use a canned product, wash out the can really well and let it dry overnight. Gather some fun scrapbooking papers, construction paper, scissors, modge podge, a paper bowl, and an old paintbrush or sponge brush.

Cover your table with paper sacks or newspaper. Lay out all your goodies on the table and put some modge podge in the paper bowl. Let your kids cut or rip the papers into smaller pieces. Put the glue on the can and put the paper on top, making sure to get all the edges glued down. Once you finish you can use acrylic paint on the inside of the can to give it a clean look. Let it dry overnight before you put anything in it. That acrylic paint can be tricky!

Using recycled household products is a great way to create fun things for yourself and your kids. But if you're looking for a more {professional} looking finished product, the store has tons of great ready to cover wood, chipboard, and papier mache products available.

So what is hot today?

Hands down, THE most popular fabric line we had in the store in 2008 was Metro Blue. So what could possibly top that? How about Metro Blue Goes Green!?!

The sumptuous green and brown fabric arrived and is out on the sales floor now. You better come and get it while you can, because the staff are hovering around it like vultures!

We also got in our first wave a new merchandise from Making Memories. Some fun Easter papers will be out on the sales floor very soon, along with some amazing organization products. Namely, this gorgeous Embellishment Center! We only got two of these to give them a try, so if you want one either come get it while it's here, or come in and put a deposit on the next order. You really just need to come see this in person. It is really beautiful!

Tuesday Tips, Tricks and Timesavers..

Make this adorable IPOD case! The super easy tutorial can be found here. The tutorial was altered to fit an IPOD Classic and I used oval elastic in place of the ribbon. Here are the measurements I used for my type of IPOD with a hard plastic case: cut your pieces to measure 4"x14" and use 1/4" seams. When I sewed the "pocket" (the 2 side seams that will hold the elastic/ribbon down) I used an 1/8" seam allowance. Follow the tutorial but sew the buttonhole where your headphone cord is inserted.

The next 2 projects are do-it-yourself custom skins for your IPOD.

I downloaded a free template for my Classic from here. You can only use these if you have a hard plastic case for your IPOD. The other alternative is to print these on sticker paper and I'm not convinced they'll come off without leaving a residue! I got the clear hard case at the PX made specifically for my model (brand: Belkin).

This 1st "skin" was made from scrap booking paper using the template as a guide (no need for photo shop with this method). After printing out template, just trace and cut.

The 2ND "skin" was done in photo shop CS3. I opened the template, inserted my pictures, printed then cut. This was done regular printer paper. Anything thicker won't fit in your plastic case. This is the front:

National Quilt Day

Every year in March the world celebrates the joy of quilting. In honor of National Quilt Day we wanted to share some fun crafts inspired by quilting.

Today we painted Majolica sushi plates with fun quilt patterns.

Majolica is a style of glazing where the colors are painted on top of a white base and no clear glaze is added over the top. After the colors were dry the "stitching" was added by scratching through the colors down to the white base. This technique is called scraffito.

Scrapbookers have also gotten in on the quilting fun, most notably Basic Grey who came out with a beautiful line of fabrics, the complete line for sale in the store.

Fabric designers have made the leap over to scrapbooking too. Michael Miller, Amy Butler and Heather Bailey have all debued their fabulous fabric designs as scrapbooking paper.

And if you really want to give your scrapbook pages the quilted feel, try adding some stitching to your pages. Machine quilting offers lots of different stitches, depending on your sewing machine. If you don't want to break out the sewing machine just do a little hand sewing. Click here for a simple tutorial on using embroidery floss to sew on your pages.
